The Feast of Roses

Each year in early June, began the Feast of Roses in Bulgaria. I come from this amazing and romantic place and I want share with you little story.
In the beautiful valley in the Valley of Roses, surrounded by the hills of two mauntains Stara Planina and Sredna Gora, began this tradition.
Young girls and boys, men and women dressed in folk costumes revived the tradition of picking up the divine flower.
Hundreds of Japanese travel each year tens of thausands of milles to attend the flower festival. With diadem from aromatic Kazanlak Rose, Bulgarian and foreign guests had the opportunity to take the freshly-made rose water, taste the pink jam, the famous gulovitsa and liqueur.
Many visitors bring with them various souvenirs from local crafters and, necessarily, flower of rose, a memory of the exceptional experience of being part of the Feast of Roses.

Martenitsa-an old Bulgarian tradition

Health, Prosperity and Happiness! Santé, Prospérité, Bonheur!
On the 1st of March Bulgarian people celebrate a traditional holiday called Baba Marta (or Grandma Marta in English) and it is related to welcoming the approaching spring. People all over the word meet spring with joy and new hopes, but in Bulgaria it is saved as an ancient tradition.

Throughout the world people celebrate the arrival of spring with joy and hope. However, it is only in Bulgaria that this festival is celebrated with the traditions of Antiquity. Bulgarians wear a small special ornament made of red and white yarn on this day, called " Martenisa". we wear it 22th March and some people wear it until they see a stork or the first buds of a tree.

photo: puzzeles-games.eu

They believe is that if you wear the Martenitsa, Baba Marta will help you, and spring will come more quickly. the 1st of March you exchange Martenitsa with everybody that you know: family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances. When you give them the decoration you wish them everything you want to happen to them during the year. you receive the Martenitsa everyone gives you and you wear them until you see a blossoming tree or a stork. The storks returning from the south and the blossoming trees are the symbols of the coming spring. When you see the first symbol of spring you have to take off your Martenitsa. After that, you hang your Martenitsa on blossoming tree like this one:

You can find the Martenitsa hanging there in the branches as you walk outside.
The Martnitsa became a symbol of peace and love, health and happiness. the white color symbolizes purity and honesty in relationships, and the red color means life, passion, and cordiality in friendship and mutual love.

Since that time the red and white threads of yarn have come symbolize the strong bond among. Bulgarians around the world. This special national holiday on March 1st reminds us of the values that the Martenitsa has carried down through the centuries.
Thus, every Bulgarian celebrates the coming of spring with this amulet inherited from the ancestors symbolizing the belief that now everything will be better.

Embroidery sweet cake/ Broderie gateau doux

Dear friends,
I would like to present you creator of this amazing cake.
,, Her name is Albena Petrova. She lives in Canada. She has graduated ceramics and glass at the applied arts school in Sofia, put her passion is cookery. When she arrived in Canada , she applied for a pastry making program at the culinary arts school in Montreal. Albena took part in a series of competitions, winning a great many awards and earning recognition for her talent. One of them is Brides Around the World.

"In March I was invited to take part in the Brides Around the World project, along with 30 other cake decorators from around the world. We each had to create a cake inspired by a wadding dress from different corners of the planet. We were given free rein to choose whether to make it contemporary or vintage and which part of the world it should come from. I had no hesitation because it was a perfect opportunity for me to make the cake I had wanted to for so long-a cake inspired by Bulgarian embroidery."

But why did she choose embroidery for her cake decoration?
''The first reason why I chose to decorate my cake with elements of the traditional Bulgarian national dress was that the embroidery is so beautiful, vivid and varied, with such elaborate stitching. this means it is a real challenge to replicate in sugar dough. the second reason is that I was  myself born in Bulgaria and it gave me such pleasure to be able to present a creation of mine showing the beauty of Bulgarian national tradition.''

Make by Albena Petrova

Albena has created hundreds of cakes in her career but what she remembers most vividly is that:
''The biggest challenge I had was my first big cake which earned me first prize for wedding cakes in Montreal. It was  an Indian wedding cake and was really difficult to make. My inspiration was the Indian sari, but also the architecture of the Taj Mahal, a symbol of once-in-a-lifetime love. I remember I spent two sleepless nights making two of its tiers.''

Make by Albena Petrova

In making each one of her cakes, Albena invests a huge amount of work, but also gives attention to each and every detail. to see of her work, log onto www.albenacakes.com  ''

Embroidery-Fashion

Embroidery is part of our cultural heritage, what better than this if we can fit in with our daily lives as a picture on the wall postcard to a loved one, focusing on clothing, jewelry, scarf or other accessory.
Embroideries are beautiful, symbolic, original and coincidentally word famous fashion houses like Valentino mention them in their collections(spring-summer).
Except in women's fashion, embroideries have a place in wardrobe of the gentlemen. This show us from "Richmart"-one of the most modern factories men's suits in Europe-which offer their customers unique high quality men's suits whith Bulgarian embroidery. Visit site: Richmart

Happy crafting,

Embroidery-my(ma)passion

After a tiring week we need a rest and relaxation. There is nothing better than to go over in the world of embroidery. Embroidery for me is like a form of meditation. In fact, meditation is release of attention from all thoughts and usually focus on something concrete.
"When embroidering, the mind of woman is absolutely focused. Embroidery we are linking reflex hand, knowing this to think what we do. At the same time we have visual perception and at all times observe a figure that has its energy impact on us.''-explains Vladi Vladimirova. She in image consultant, graduated one of the most prestigious institutes in the field-London Image Institute. It is true that needle work takes time, but it gives us a rest, is invaluable for our physical and spiritual condition.
And here is the result rested and happy with the work done I want to introduce you to my new embroidered card which I made on the motif of Bulgarian shevisa.

Thank you for your visit!
